Medical Exams for Long Term Care Insurance

After applying for a Long Term Care Insurance Policy, one may be required, depending on your medical history and the last time you visited a doctor, to take a paramedical exam in order to verify your health before the insurer approves an application.

What To Expect

A paramedical exam consists of a number of questions about your medical history, measurements of your height and weight, blood pressure and pulse. A urine sample and blood sample may also be required. Undressing will not be required during the exam and it usually doesn't take more than 20-30 minutes. In some circumstances, an electrocardiogram (EKG) may be required or a cognitive assessment, such as a "delayed word recall" test, in order for the insurer to properly underwrite your policy. The results of the exam, blood and urine will be confidential and sent to the insurance company to be reviewed.

The Exam Location

The exam can be administered at a number of different locations. Usually, the applicant can choose to have the test taken at their home, at their work or at an office of the paramedical company administering the exam. Many paramedical companies will administer the exam during the day, in the evening until around 8, as well as on the weekends.

Precautions

The night before and the day of your exam, certain precautions can be taken by you to ensure you get the best results on your exam.

• Get a good night's sleep the night before your exam
  
• Do Not drink any alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before your exam
  
• Do Not smoke or chew tobacco for at least one hour before your exam
  
• Try to avoid drinking caffeinated beverages for one hour before your exam
  
• Limit salt intake and high cholesterol foods for the 24 hours before your exam
  
• Try to avoid strenuous activity, like exercising, for the 24 hours before the exam
  
• Drink Plenty of fluids the day of your exam
  
• If possible, do not eat the meal preceding your exam if you are having blood drawn. If your exam is in the morning, avoid dinner the night before.

What You Need

For your exam, you should have available your physicians' names, addresses and names of medications you are taking. Also, have a working knowledge of your medical history and be able to provide approximate dates of surgeries, tests that were done, and hospital visits during the last 5 years or maybe longer. This information will better assist the insurance company in determining your risk and issuing you a policy at the most favorable rate for your medical condition and history.
